Chicago Priest Removed Over Investigation Involving Minor: Cupich

A popular priest has "agreed to step aside" while an investigation is conducted, Cardinal Blase Cupich announced.

CHICAGO — The popular pastor of San Jose Luis Sanchez del Rio Parish is under investigation over "conduct violations involving a minor," Cardinal Blase Cupich announced in a letter to parishioners Saturday. Father Gary Graf has "agreed to step aside" while the Archdiocese conducts an investigation, Cupich said.

"I realize this news comes at a difficult time, especially as you come together as one parish and celebrate your future as a faith community," Cupich said in his letter. "Please know that I am close to you in prayer. My simple request is that God grant you the grace of patience as we work to evaluate this allegation."

Bishop Alberto Rojas will serve as administrator of San José Luis Sánchez del Rio Parish while Graf is away, Cupich said.

"Only in this way can we remain true to our promise to safeguard our parishioners, especially children and youth, our most important concern. Cupich's letter read. "We pledge to keep you informed of any new developments."

Graf could not be reached for comment; however, he told Telemundo Chicago in Spanish that "not being able to participate in the ministry hurts" him, and that he's "waiting for the investigation to come to an end."

For years, Graf has been an outspoken supporter of refugees and undocumented people living in the United States. Graf went on a hunger strike earlier this year in support of "Dreamers," undocumented immigrants brought into the country as children who are seeking a path to permanent residency by meeting requirements including passing a series of background checks, attending an institution of higher learning or serving in the U.S. military.
