How the YMCA Prevents Summer Learning Loss in Youth

Learn how providing children with an enriching summer experience can have a lasting impact on their lives.

At the Y, we believe integrating learning, safety, and health into your child’s summertime fun is vital to their development. Beyond preparing students to succeed in the next school year, summer learning programs also help improve the health of youth and keeps them safe.

According to the National Summer Learning Association, most students lose two months of math skills every summer, and low-income children typically lose another two to three months in reading. Additionally, by the fifth grade, summer learning loss can leave low-income students two-and-a-half to three years behind their peers. Learn ways you can take action on National Summer Learning Day here.

The YMCA’s Summer Day Camps create an enriching experience so your child continues to learn, develop, and build new friendships throughout the summer. The Y offers a variety of programs to support your child’s interests and needs. Our specialty camps include programs focused on sports, drama, art, science, and many more.

“[It’s a] great place. My 7-year-old daughter feels very safe there. I wanted to sign her up for summer camp somewhere else but she insisted on going here. She loves it and that makes me a happy camper.” — Derek, Leaning Tower YMCA

The Y serves over 6,000 children throughout the region in our summer day camp programs. Through generous donations from members of our community, the Y is able to offer financial assistance to ensure that children in need have the opportunity to benefit from memberships and programs. Last year alone, we provided nearly $165,000 in financial assistance for children to attend day camp. To give more youth the opportunity to attend summer day camp, donate here.
