New Wicker Park Chop Shop Sued, Forced to Change Name
The future butcher shop on North Avenue was sued by a River North steakhouse who said Chicago Chop Shop would take advantage of the restaurant's name.

An upcoming butcher shop, restaurant and bar in Wicker Park is being forced to drop “Chicago” from its name after a lawsuit was filed by a River North steakhouse.
Chicago Chop Shop, slated for 2033 W. North Ave., will henceforth be known as just Chop Shop, a spokeswoman with the restaurant told Chicago Real Estate Daily. The minor alteration will put the legal proceedings to rest.
The owners were sued by Chicago Chop House owner Robert Patel, who claimed both the name and menu of prime meats would both confuse customers and take advantage of the restaurant’s long standing reputation.
Chop Shop will also include a private event space called The 1st Ward.
But Chop Shop owners Nick Moretti, Mario Minelli and Matt Woodburn initially refused to make any changes, reporter Alison Burdo writes. Chicago Chop House’s lawyer sent a cease-and-desist letter in June, but their lawyer said there was no concern “the general public could possibly confuse the two businesses.”
The more than 9,000-square-foot business, which will open in early September, was announced in March. It's filling a century-old warehouse.
