Private Security Proposed for Streets in Wicker Park, Bucktown

Taxpayers could spend $100,000 for added security in these two neighborhoods.

Chicago, IL - Two Chicago neighborhoods may be getting private security firms to patrol the streets for crime.

The proposal initiated by 2nd Ward Ald. Brian Hopkins isn’t for Englewood, Auburn Gresham, Roseland, West Rogers Park or others known for crime.

It’s targeting crime in Wicker Park and Bucktown.

The proposal seeks to reallocate $100,000 in taxpayer money from Wicker Bark and Bucktown’s Special Service Area funds to contract with private security firms, who would act in a manner similar to police at major thoroughfares in the Near North Side neighborhoods, according to a report from the Chicagoist.

“This is a common sense measure with the goal of enhancing security for the Wicker Park and Bucktown communities," said Hopkins.
