Wicker Park Home to Nation's Best Fried Chicken

Food and Wine Magazine rated the best fried chicken spots in the country and a neighborhood staple made the list.

A local fried chicken favorite is getting national attention.

Harold's Chicken Shack in Wicker Park was named to Food and Wine magazine's best fried chicken joints in the country

The magazine chose the restaurant at 1361 N. Milwaukee Ave. because of its simplicity: white or dark meat fried in oil and served with hot sauce.

Wicker Park's location is one of 65 Harold's Chicken Shacks across Illinois and Milwaukee. Harold Pierce opened the first location in 1950 on the South Side.

"When I was a child, a preacher came to our house and ate all our chicken. I told my mother then that when I got to be a big boy I was going to open a chicken restaurant," he said, according to the Harold's website.
