BUFFALO GROVE, IL — The following information comes from the Buffalo Grove Police Department (except when noted) and court records as a record of incidents reported to police and those arrested on criminal charges, which represent accusations by the state that are often dropped or reduced.

Updated information may be available from the Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Everyone arrested is presumed to be innocent unless found guilty in court beyond a reasonable doubt.

ARRESTS

POSSESSION OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE

Noah B. Karpman, 24, of the 1000 block of Freemont Court West, Buffalo Grove, is accused of possession of a controlled substance, and was arrested at 12:34 a.m. Jan. 18 in the 1200 block of Arlington Heights Road. A concerned citizen flagged police at the Shell gas station regarding a male stumbling through the parking lot and getting into a car. Police approached the car, still parked in the gas station parking lot, and found a passenger breathing, but unresponsive. A bond hearing was held Jan. 19 in Waukegan.

Iryna Tityk, 25, of the 2400 block of 1st Avenue, River Grove, is accused of driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal lane usage, and was arrested at 12:19 a.m. Jan. 15 on Lake Cook Road. She was given a $3,000 bond and assigned a court date of Feb. 17 in Waukegan.

IDENTITY THEFT
Officers took reports from 40 fraud complainants who received notifications from either their employers or the Illinois Department of Employment Security that their information was used to apply for benefits without their permission.

MOTORIST DISPUTE

A citizen called police at 2:34 p.m. Jan. 17 to report they saw two vehicles chasing each other in the parking lot at Bucky's Convenience Store, 1251 N McHenry Road, and in the street. Police first reached one driver, who said he had possibly cut off another drive. He said the driver pulled up next to him at the intersection of Route 83 and Arlington Heights Road, and she began swearing at him, even though he had tried to apologize. The driver also said the woman threw an object at his driver's side door. Believing there was no damage to the car, he started following her to talk, but said she drove away erratically. Police observed no damage to his car. Police then spoke to the woman, who said the other driver's car almost rear-ended her. She said he was driving erratically and was going to cause an accident. She claims that when she pulled up to his car, he yelled a profanity at her. She also denied throwing anything at him.

DECEPTIVE PRACTICES

A cashier at Walgreens, 15 N Buffalo Grove Road, reported at 5:59 p.m. Jan. 20 that a man walked into the store, brought a gift card and birthday card to the register, and asked for $200 to be loaded onto an Amazon Express gift card he handed her. The man gave the cashier three $100 bills, which had the watermark of a $10 bill and no texture. She alerted her manager, who also noticed these irregularities. When the man was asked about them, he took the bills back and left the store. She described the man as black, wearing black jeans, a black jacket, and a black and white baseball hat. He appeared to be in his 30s, and between 5-foot-10 and 5-foot-11. He left in a gray sedan.

SUSPICIOUS PHONE CALLS

A Mill Creek Drive resident called police at 7:56 a.m. Jan. 20 to report a male had called her, saying that he was her grandson, and he needed money because he was in trouble. The resident knew it was a scam and did not give the caller any information or money. A Google search traced the call to New York City.

RETAIL THEFT

A manager at Woodman's Food Markets, 1550 E Deerfield Parkway, reported at 11:54 a.m. Jan. 16 that a male entered the store at 11:35 a.m. and went to the liquor department. He was seen on video surveillance putting eight bottles of tequila into his jacket and exiting the store without paying. He is also seen walking to his car and putting them in the car. He then entered the store a second tie and went to the frozen food section where he took four 32-ounce bags of frozen crab legs, walked toward the back of the store and placed them in his coat. He was confronted by an employee, whom he told he was hungry before returning one bag. He then left the store, got in his vehicle and exited the parking lot onto westbound Deerfield Parkway. The stolen tequila and frozen crab legs totaled $489.01.

DISTURBANCE

An Uber driver called police at 2:50 a.m. Jan. 17 to report they were having a disagreement with a customer and his wife over COVID-19 related numbers. The customer admitted to police that they had called the driver some unkind things. The driver had pulled over near Bucky's, 10 W Dundee Road, to let them out as the male customer had become belligerent. The driver said the male tried to open his locked door after exiting, and believed he wanted to start a fight. No one was injured. The driver refunded the customer their ride fare. Police waited while a second Uber driver arrived to pick them up.
