Fire Leaves Buffalo Grove Home Uninhabitable: Officials

BUFFALO GROVE, IL — A Buffalo Grove home is uninhabitable following a Monday fire that caused $150,000 in damage. According to officials from the Buffalo Grove Fire Department, the single-family structure in the 600 block of Patton Drive started at around noon. Three residents in the home were able to get out safely with no injuries, while one firefighter/paramedic was injured.

Roads were closed in the area for nearly three hours as firefighters from Buffalo Grove and five area departments worked to extinguish the fire, according to a release. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and remains under investigation.

Police officers were initially at the scene and reported seeing fire coming from the roof. Moments later, firefighter/paramedics arrived, when fire and heavy smoke were then issuing from the rear roof of the house, according to the release. The fire initially traveled from the upstairs bathroom, up into the attic, then through the attic. The fire department’s alarm response was then elevated at 12:08 p.m. This involved calling in members of the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System to assist with firefighting efforts.

The fire caused Patton Drive to be closed between Chenault Road and Hawthorne Road from just after 12 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. when the fire was finally extinguished. It destroyed a portion of the home’s roof, caused extensive damage to the attic and all three upstairs bedrooms, in addition to a bathroom, according to the release. Water and smoke damage also occurred on the first floor and in the basement of the home.

According to officials, the house will be uninhabitable until it is inspected by the Buffalo Grove Building Division. In addition to Buffalo Grove, personnel from five other area fire departments that are part of MABAS assisted in extinguishing the fire.
