All Illinois Flags To Be Flown At Half-Staff To Honor Officer

ILLINOIS — All people, businesses or entities that are covered by the Illinois Flag Display Act are required to fly the Illinois flag at half-staff until Wednesday in remembrance of a Champaign police officer killed in the line of duty, Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced Monday.

Officer Chris Oberheim died during a shoot-out following a domestic disturbance call on May 19. The 24-year-old suspect who shot Oberheim, identified as Darion Lafayette, also wounded another officer before he was shot and killed at the scene.

The Illinois Flag Display Act asks that all recipients of Illinois flags from the state government adhere to guidelines on when to fly the flag at half-staff, a symbol of mourning and respect.

The Department of Central Management Services said all flags should be lowered to half-staff immediately and risen again at sunset on Wednesday evening.
