Service Technicians currently working in East Central Illinois now have a rare opportunity to secure significantly better pay, health insurance, workplace conditions and an early retirement plan.
For the first time in more than 2 years, UA Local 149 is accepting applications for its Service Technician Apprenticeship.
More than 600 fellow East Central Illinois residents are already proud members of Local 149, representing more than 40 local companies providing plumbing, heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, steam, industrial process, boiler and medical-gas piping services all across the area.

Those who qualify for the Service Technician Apprenticeship will immediately earn an hourly wage of $20.75 an hour and within five years, will make at least $39.20 an hour and be eligible to test to become a Journeyman, which will lead to earning a total package of at least $66.38 an hour.
“Under the supervision of union leaders, apprentices will complete 240 hours of training and 1,700 hours on the job each year for five years before advancing to Journeyman” Business Manager, Matt Kelly said. “Your services to our union will also be rewarded with extremely generous health benefits, which include a dedicated health clinic for you and your family, as well as a pension with early retirement incentives.”

Interested applicants must have at least 4,000 hours of experience working as Service Technicians or Plumbers, and live in one of the following counties: Champaign, Coles, Cumberland, Effingham, Ford, Jasper and Piatt.
"There is a shortage of skilled labor positions and we want to do all we can to create opportunities for local residents interested in pursuing a career in those fields,” Kelly added. “By joining Local 149, you’ll have better wages and a Union fighting hard to make sure your efforts aren’t being taken advantage of by your employer.”
