25-Year Veteran of Chicago Heights Police Department Passes Away

Officer Hibbs committed his professional life to Chicago Heights and protecting its citizens and inspiring others to serve the community.

(Chicago Heights, IL) – City of Chicago Heights Mayor David Gonzalez and City of Chicago Heights Police Chief Thomas Rogers today announced the passing of Officer Gary Hibbs, a 25-year veteran of the CHPD.

On March 4th, 2021 at 1:52 p.m., Officer Hibbs, was answering a disturbance call of two individuals fighting inside of a third-floor apartment on 14th Place in Chicago Heights. Upon Officer Hibbs attempting to affect an arrest on one of the individuals, Officer Hibbs fell to the ground unconscious and required immediate medical assistance.

Officer Gary Hibbs was being cared for in the ICU at Franciscan Hospital in Olympia Fields for life saving treatment. On March 12, 2021, in the early morning hours, Officer Gary Hibbs passed away at Franciscan Hospital.

The Chicago Heights Police Department and Mayor Gonzalez are asking for thoughts and prayers for CHPD Officer Gary Hibbs, along with his son Jimmy Hibbs (also a CHPD officer) and the rest of the Hibbs family.

“Officer Hibbs committed his professional life to Chicago Heights and protecting its citizens and inspiring others to serve our community, including his son, Jimmy, who became a Chicago Heights police officer more than five years ago,” said Mayor Gonzalez. “Officer Hibbs’ passing is a grievous loss to both his family and to our city, and my heartfelt condolences are with his family at this moment.”

“The Chicago Heights Police Department has suffered an irreplaceable loss in Officer Hibbs’ passing,” said Chief Rogers. “Officer Hibbs set the gold standard both as a police professional and as a friend to us all in the department. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time.”
