Bloom 206 Chess Team has Successful Virtual Season

The students competed virtually and achieved an impressive record.

Bloom Township’s Chess Team has had a very exciting season this year. Using virtual platforms, Bloom’s team was able to play competitively.

This year, more than 20 students played for the district's team. They fought hard and collectively earned a record of 12-4 in the Conference matches, putting them in 2nd place. Outstanding players won awards for their hard work and amazing performances.

The team consists of Orlando Baez, Caleb Campbell, Angel Montes, Cruz Cortez, Lebaron Ward, Diego Morales, James Harris, Angel Gutierrez, Marilyn Garcia-Valle, and Lorenzo Mendoza. Placing first overall was Orlando Baez, who won 1st in the conference, 1st on board 1. Angel Montez placed 3rd on board 2. Caleb Campbell placed second on board 5. Montez also set a record for most games played in the conference at 46. In 3rd place on board 5 was Cruz Cortez, while Diego Morales placed 2nd on board 6. Finally, Angel Gutierrez placed 3rd on board 7.

The Bloom Township High School administration extends a heartfelt congratulations to all of the players.

The Chess team’s season ran uninterrupted because of the hard work put in by the coaches at Bloom 206, Rockford, Palatine, and Glenbard East. They developed the online tools and virtual training needed to work with IHSA and modify the rules and conditions.
