Chicago Heights To Get New LED Street Lights On Roads

The city says the new program will distribute better, more reliable outdoor lighting.

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, IL — The City of Chicago Heights announced it will be administering a new street lighting modernization program that will provide reliable LED lighting fixtures on streets.

The new program comes as a way to increase safety, reduce energy costs and improve the environment, according to the city. The new lights will be installed during daylight hours from now to the beginning of January, according to the city.

The new lights will be installed by John Burns Construction Company, and the city said bucket trucks with the company logo will be in place where the assembly is occurring.

The city said the LED lights will require less maintenance and save about $80,000 a year in electrical utility costs. According to the city, LED lighting consumes 50-75 percent less electricity than existing high-pressure sodium (HPS) lights.

According to the city, no main streets will need to be closed off for the installation, however residential streets may require brief closures. If parking restrictions are put in place, residents will be informed prior to installation, according to the city.
