Marian Diver Heads to Nationals

Marian sophomore Joe Cifelli earned his way to the U.S. National Diving Completion in San Antonio, Texas. Cifelli will compete with 30 of the best divers in the U.S. in the 16- to 18-year-old age group.

After just over a year of competitive diving experience, Marian Catholic High School sophomore Joe Cifelli is ready to make waves in the national diving scene. Cifelli, 15, earned the spot at nationals after winning his division at the regional level earlier this year.

“I'm nervous but, I'm excited, too" Cifelli said. "This is a going to be the best competition I've seen."

Cifelli said that he got into diving several years ago, as a way to pass the time and only really began competing in high school. He said that since Marian doesn't have a men's swim team, he only competes in three events each season: The H-F Invite, the IHSA Sectional meet and, if he qualifies, the State meet.

“I decided to start diving for fun, but I've really only started competing about a year-and-a-half ago," he said. "Since I only compete at H-F, sectionals and state, this is pretty big for me."

Although he said this year's national meet will be a 'learning experience,' he would like to win the event in the future. Then, he has his sights set on an even bigger goal.

“I definitely want to dive in college," he said. "But the ultimate goal is to make it to the Olympic trials in 2016 or 2020. That's where I want to make it."
