Carla's Red Hots May Come To Darien

Operator describes what restaurant will offer community. It would be open every day.

DARIEN, IL — A hot dog restaurant may become the newest addition to Brookhaven Marketplace if the city approves a permit for the establishment. The city's zoning commission plans to take up the issue early next month.

Besides hot dogs, the restaurant also plans to serve barbecue beef, chili, pasta, cheeseburgers, chicken sandwiches, steak tacos and meatball sandwiches, among other items. The applicant is Joel Ruiz of Bellwood. Darien Patch obtained information about the proposal through an open records request.

"The reason why we wanted to open Carla's Red Hots at this location is because we know it's the ideal place for it," Ruiz said in a handwritten statement to the city. "It has the right equipment for a restaurant. This area is calm and a good place to be."

Ruiz said he has nine years of experience in the business.

"We know how to cook all the food that would be on the menu," he said.

The restaurant is planned for Suite 25B in Brookhaven Marketplace, 7516 S. Cass Ave. Its hours would be 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday.

The zoning commission is set to consider the proposal at its meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, in the City Council's chambers, 1702 Plainfield Road. The public is allowed to comment. The city staff has not made a recommendation yet.
