City Reminds Residents Of Carbon Monoxide Risks In Winter
Carbon monoxide exposure can be deadly. The City of Darien offers tips to help prevent it during the winter.

DARIEN, IL — With heavy snowfall comes the increased risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that nearly 400 carbon monoxide poisoning deaths took place in 2015, with more than a third of these happening between December and February.
City officials in Darien report that emergency crews respond to an increased number of carbon monoxide alerts and emergencies during this time of year. The city offers a few tips to help decrease your risk of carbon monoxide exposure during the winter months.
According to city officials, heavy snow can block chimneys and furnace vents. They note that these blockages often occur in homes that have high efficiency furnace systems. When snow accumulates enough to block the venting system, it may cause carbon monoxide to enter your home.
