Darien Sees Lowest Percent Hike In Virus Cases During Crisis
The city has experienced no coronavirus deaths in weeks, county says.
DARIEN, IL — Darien's increase in new coronavirus cases last week was the lowest percentage hike since the beginning of the pandemic, DuPage County Health Department figures show.
As of Sunday, Darien had 1,484 coronavirus cases, up 18 from a week before, or a 1.2 percent hike. The previous week's increase was 1.7 percent. In the six weeks before that, the hikes ranged from 1.4 percent to 7.5 percent.
The city's number of local deaths has remained the same over the last few weeks, totaling 18. That works out to less than a thousandth of Darien's population.

Darien's rate of increase in coronavirus cases of 1.2 percent was higher than DuPage County's 1.1 percent hike in the last week. Darien makes up 2.3 percent of the county's population, but only 2.1 percent of the county's coronavirus caseload.
As of Sunday, Darien had 68.6 coronavirus cases per thousand people, better than its neighbors. The figure compares to 68.7 in La Grange Park, 71.7 in Western Springs, 75 in Hinsdale, 77.1 in DuPage County, 78.2 in Elmhurst, 81 in Clarendon Hills, 85.7 in suburban Cook County, 90.4 in Burr Ridge and 95.2 in La Grange (including unincorporated La Grange Highlands).
As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,172,824, up .9 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 20,234 state residents.
Nationally, 27.8 million people have caught the virus, up 1.4 percent from the week before. A total of 494,008 people have died from the virus in the United States.
