Find out what's happening in Darienfor free with the latest updates from Patch.

Uncover interesting facts about notable African Americans while learning tips and tricks to build internet investigation skills. Kids will build their civic and social-emotional skills by sharing their thoughts on quotes by famous (and not so famous) African Americans. Mid-Kids also will improve their written communication skills by designing a poster with a quote that is important to them.

Black History Month Movie Club: Fruitvale Station

Saturday, Feb. 20, 7 p.m.

Teens

Celebrate Black History Month by watching these historical dramas from Black directors. Watch the films streamed over Zoom, then host a brief discussion after the movie is over.

Fruitvale Station is the true story of Oscar Grant, a young man killed by Bay Area police. Director Ryan Coogler and star Michael B. Jordan help paint the picture of Oscar's final hours and the events leading up to his death.

Answering the Call: Artists of the Harlem Renaissance

Tuesday, Feb. 23, 7 p.m.

Adults

Between the world wars, African American artists produced an extraordinary output of painting, sculpture, and photography answering a call to action from Howard University Professor Alain Locke. Diverse in style, these artists often told the story of important events in American history, including The Great Migration. Art historian Jeff Mishur of Art Excursions discusses the artists associated with this movement.

The Long Shadow Movie Screening and Live Director Q&A

Wednesday, Feb. 24, 7 p.m.

Join us for a live online conversation and Q&A with director Frances Causey, as she discusses her film, The Long Shadow. Registrants can watch the movie online anytime and submit questions before the program.

This program is co-sponsored by multiple Illinois libraries, and held in partnership with Racial Awareness in the North Shore (RAIN) and Together is Better Alliance (TiBA).

Race & Restorative Justice: A Conversational Approach to a Challenging Topic
