Local Mom Brings Kids Together Through Education-Based Childcare

Katie Moore opened the first Kiddie Academy in Bolingbrook five years ago.

A suburban local is trying to bring together children of all races, cultures and backgrounds through a day care program that puts an emphasis on education and positive guidance.

Katie Moore, a parent who herself has a mixed-race family, opened the first Kiddie Academy in Bolingbrook five years ago, she said in an email. Now, her second location has opened for business in Darien.

The Darien location at 1502 75th St. will provide full-time care, kindergarten, before- and after-school care and summer camps for children between 6 and 12 years old. The idea, according to Moore’s philosophy, is to prepare kids “for school and for life.”

Moore has incorporated technology programs, family-style dining, outdoor play areas and an indoor gym with a rock climbing wall into her new building. She’s also using Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” program to ensure children at the Academy learn and retain healthy habits.

The most important thing, though, she said, is exposing kids to each other to create communities within schools.

“I have found that children benefit by being exposed to different cultures and races at an early age,” Moore said in the email. “They have a much stronger understanding and respect for each other. This also includes children with disabilities and those who come from different types of families, as well.”
