Touching Meaning Behind Orange Ribbons On Trees In Darien

The orange ribbons you see in Darien honor the memory of Joey Ventimiglia, 7, who died on January 5.

DARIEN, IL — If you've driven around Darien lately, you probably couldn't help but notice the bright orange ribbons that are tied to trees throughout the city. Many residents have recently reached out to Patch to find out the significance of these orange ribbons.

The orange ribbons were placed to honor the memory of Joey Ventimiglia, who passed away on January 5 after battling Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). Joey was just seven years old and orange was his favorite color.

Our Lady of Peace Catholic Parish, where Joey had just started second grade, wrote, "[Joey] will always be a Crusader and we will always love him. In support of Joey's family, many homes have put orange ribbons on the trees in the neighborhood. Please join in showing Joey and his family your love and support."
