3 Deerfield Wrestlers Aiming To Finish State Final Atop Podium

After the Warriors' team runner-up finish at sectionals, two seniors and a junior compete at this weekend's state championship in Champaign.

DEERFIELD, IL — Deerfield High School wrestlers aim to bring home three medals from this weekend's state championships in Champaign.

A trio of Warrior wrestlers topped the podium in three different weight classes Feb. 9 at the IHSA class 3A sectional tournament at Barrington High School. Two finished as sectional champions and one as a runner-up.

DHS senior Brock Emmerich competes in the 160 pound division, junior Cody Goodman in the 195 pound bracket and senior Jake Reicin in the 152 pound bracket.

At the Feb. 2 regional tournament, all three took first place, but the team finished second to hosts Libertyville, which has qualified for the state finals as a team.

The Warriors are coming off an 11th consecutive conference championship as a team, with nine wrestlers in finals and four champions. Every level of Deerfield wrestling won a conference title this year, according to coach Marc Pechter.

CSL North coaches voted Emmerich the most outstanding wrestler of last month's the conference tournament.

The individual state tournament begins Thursday and concludes Saturday at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's arena.
