Congressional Art Competition Opens For Area High School Students
The winning student artist will receive a ticket to Washington, D.C., to see their work hung in the U.S. Capitol for a year.

LINCOLNSHIRE, IL — With Youth Art Month underway, U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider announced the opening of the annual congressional art competition for high school students. Students have until next month to submit artwork to the competition to one of the congressman's offices in the 10th Congressional District.
“The schools in our district are full of fantastically creative students and strong visual arts programs that nurture their talent,” said Schneider. “Every year, I look forward to seeing the artwork our young people create, and am proud to help highlight the skill and imagination of local students with this contest.”
The theme for the 2019 competition is "character," according to Schneider's office. Students may interpret the theme however they choose. A panel of local artists an educators will judge submissions.

The winning submission will be displayed in the halls of the U.S. Capitol for a year. The second place selection will be hung at Schneider's district office and the third place piece will be displayed at the his Washington, D.C. office.
The high school artist picked for the top prize will also win a pair of round-trip plane tickets to Washington for the Congressional Art Competition award ceremony. First prize winners from all 434 congressional districts across the country will see their artwork hung in the Capitol building at the ceremony.

Last year's winner was Joselyn Duvon of Waukegan High School, with her piece "Sueña para un mejor mañana." Students from Glenbrook North High School and Deerfield High School were selected as the second and third runners up after 55 students from 15 different high schools submitted artwork inspired by the theme of "dreams."
The deadline for submissions to the 2019 competition is April 12. Schneider's office said submissions can be dropped off at any of the congressman's three district offices:
- Lincolnshire from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at 111 Barclay Blvd., Suite 200
- Waukegan from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesdays or 8 a.m to 5 p.m. Wednesdays at 100 N. Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave.
- Round Lake Park from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays or 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays at 433 E. Washington St.
The winner of the 2019 Congressional Art Competition for the 10th Congressional District will be announced at a reception for artists and their families on from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on April 24 at the College of Lake County in Grayslake.
