Family Days Canceled, Fall Celebration Planned In Deerfield

The annual Fourth of July celebration would have restricted participation due to capacity limits, according to the Village of Deerfield.

DEERFIELD, IL — Calling it a difficult decision and after much consideration, the Village of Deerfield announced that the annual Family Days festivities have been canceled. A large community celebration is planned in its place later this fall.

Held over the course of July 3 and July 4, the large-scale Independence Day event typically brings out large crowds, something Village officials are concerned with based on Centers for Disease Control guidance regarding the coronavirus. The Village anticipates more residents will have an opportunity to be vaccinated by the fall.

"As the name implies, Family Days is a family event and it is important for all families to feel safe at a large-scale event that spends taxpayer dollars," the Village of Deerfield said in a news release. "This decision is based on CDC guidance to ensure ample time for residents to get vaccinated and everyone to feel comfortable attending, as vaccinations for children 12 to 15 have only recently been approved."

The fall event is expected to include a fireworks display, live music and other family activities. More details will be released shortly, according to the Village.

"We understand this decision will receive mixed reactions from residents," Mayor Dan Shapiro said. "While feedback is always welcome, please know this decision was made with the best interests of our residents in mind and the Village’s desire to bring our community back together in person in an atmosphere where all families feel safe and all are welcome without capacity limitations."
