Lake County Sheriff: St. Patrick’s Day Traffic Safety Campaign

Sheriff John D. Idleburg reminds the community to plan ahead for a sober ride if traveling to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is increasing traffic enforcement patrols from March 12 – March 21, 2021, to keep impaired drivers off the roadways.

“With the loosening of restrictions put in place at area bars and restaurants we understand the desire to go out to celebrate, but we urge everyone to do so safely and responsibly,” said Sheriff John D. Idleburg. “While the celebrations may continue to feel a bit different, the basics remain the same: If you’ll be drinking or consuming cannabis, make the right choice to find a sober driver to get you and your loved ones home safely.”

In addition to patrolling for impaired drivers, sheriff’s deputies will also be on the lookout for those who are not buckled, particularly at night when seat belt usage rates are lowest. Speed violations and distracted driving laws will also be strictly enforced.

The St. Patrick’s Day “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign is funded by federal traffic safety funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and is administered through the Illinois Department of Transportation.
