For the fourth consecutive year, Christopher B. Burke Engineering, Ltd. (CBBEL) has been named one of the nation’s Best Workplaces for Commuters. The designation honors CBBEL’s long-standing and award-winning Bike-to-Work program, now in its 15th year.

CBBEL is among a select group of workplaces in the United States that have achieved the Best Workplaces for Commuters National Standard of Excellence by providing an array of commuter benefits, resulting in at least 14 percent of their employee base not driving alone to work within a 12-month period.

“Biking to work is a big part of CBBEL’s culture, in large part because our program aims to make it as easy as possible for employees to get to and from work how they choose,” said Mike Kerr, PE, CBBEL President and founder of the firm’s Bike to Work program. “Particularly over the past year, when all of our daily activities have been reduced due to the pandemic, commuting by bike is a great way to stay active and healthy while also helping the environment.”

As part of the Bike-to-Work program, CBBEL pays employees $0.75/mile and provides additional assistance with routes, equipment and gear. Since the Program’s inception in 2006, more than 180 employees have biked over 400,000 miles, which equates to approximately 800,000 pounds of CO2 eliminated, 18.5 million calories burned and more than $85,500 in gas money saved.

CBBEL has also adopted an Enterprise CarShare program, which gives employees access to shared vehicles, allowing them to commute to leave their personal cars at home.

“CBBEL is one of the top employers in the nation offering high level commuter benefits to their employees,” said Julie Bond, Program Manager, Best Workplaces for Commuters. “CBBEL made the list because they offer transportation choices that include bicycle facilities and access to Emergency Ride Home programs. CBBEL gives its employees the support they need to get to and from work and be at their best before, during, and after their workday.”
