According to police, the Des Plaines woman was walking with her husband when the accident happened, reports said.

NILES, IL — A Des Plaines woman died Sunday after she was hit by a car while walking in Niles. The Daily Herald reported that Nirmalaben M. Shah, 68, was walking with her husband across Milwaukee Avenue around 6 p.m. near a signalized intersection by the Golf Mill Shopping Center and car dealership, when the accident took place, according to Niles Police Bureau Chief Robert Tornabene. He added that Shah and her husband weren't in the crosswalk when they walked from west to east across Milwaukee, when a 2010 Toyota Corolla headed south on Milwaukee went through a green light at the intersection before hitting Shah, according to the news report.

Shah was pronounced dead at 6:29 p.m. at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Tornabene said, adding that her husband wasn't hit by the Corolla that was driven by a 39-year-old Des Plaines man. According to the Daily Herald, Tornabene said that based on early investigation charges aren't likely against the driver who didn't show signs of impairment, however, the investigation continues.

Niles police said Milwaukee Ave. was closed Sunday evening in both directions from Golf to Maryland due to the accident.
