Des Plaines won't force top city employees to live in town

Aldermen were split on the perennial issue

The Des Plaines City Council rejected a proposed residency requirement for city government department heads on Monday night, according to the Daily Herald. Several department heads, including the police chief and the city manager, live outside of Des Plaines.

Ward 4 Alderman Dick Sayad argued for the proposal, saying it's important for officials to see the impact of their work first-hand.

Mayor Matthew Bogusz countered that the residency requirement would significant reduce the applicant pool for new department heads.

The vote on the proposed requirement and a proposal for a ballot referendum on the issue was four to four, but the mayor broke the tie by voting against the measures
