Driver Facing Reckless Homicide Charge In Fatal Des Plaines Crash

Eldor Akilov, 33, faces a reckless homicide charge in the Jan. 5 Elmhurst Rd. crash that killed a 46-year-old Des Plaines man, police said.

DES PLAINES, IL — A Florida man accused of speeding when his car hit another vehicle in Des Plaines Sunday, Jan. 5, is facing a reckless homicide charge stemming from the crash that killed a man and injured his teenage son, according to the Daily Herald. Eldor Akilov, 33, is being held in the Cook County Jail on $400,000 bail, and is expected to appear in court Tuesday, according to the Cook County Sheriff's office website. At 7:06 p.m. Akilov was driving a 2019 Chevrolet Impala north on Elmhurst Road above 80 mph when the car hit a 2008 Nissan Altima that was turning onto northbound Elmhurst Road from a private driveway, the news report said.

The crash killed the driver of the Altima, 46-year-old Alejandro Arzeta, from Des Plaines, and seriously injured his 13-year-old son who was a passenger in the car. Des Plaines Police Department Commander Christopher Mierzwa said the teen is expected to recover, the Daily Herald reported.

Police said according to hospital records obtained via search warrants, Akilov was driving at the time of the accident with a blood alcohol content above the legal limit. The reckless homicide charge against Akilov was approved Saturday by the Cook County State's Attorney's office, and further charges are pending, according to the news report.
