Oakton art exhibit about women and fashion opens Oct. 3

The juried art exhibition “Fashioning the Self: You Are What You Wear?” examining how fashion can have many definitions opens Thursday, Oct. 3, at Oakton Community College’s Koehnline Museum of Art, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines. Enjoy a free gala reception with the artists from 5-8 p.m. opening night.

The annual collaboration between Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS) and the Koehnline Museum of Art will display over 60 works by women artists from around the globe. This year’s theme provides a commentary on what women wear and what it means.

“We were so pleased with the quality and variety of submissions,” Kathleen Carot, WGS co-coordinator, says. “The works reflect a broad diversity of approaches to this year’s theme and display a wide range of medium and technique. Each submission illustrates the complexities of identity and experiences that fashion engenders.”

“Fashioning the Self: You Are What You Wear?” runs through Friday, Oct. 25. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The exhibition is funded in part by a generous grant from the Oakton Educational Foundation.
