Oakton art exhibit featuring works of noted sculptor opens May 9

Oakton's Koehnline Museum of Art will display a collection of five decades of work by sculptor Joseph A. Burlini May 9 through June 13.

Oakton Community College’s Koehnline Museum of Art will display a collection of five decades of work by noted sculptor Joseph A. Burlini Thursday, May 9, through Thursday, June 13, at the college’s Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Road. The public is invited to a free opening night reception for “Joseph A. Burlini: Retrospective” from 5 to 8 p.m.

“Joseph’s mantra is ‘I build my dreams,’ and the exhibition will present a selection of welded steel, bronze, gold, aluminum and plexiglass sculptures from various periods of his lengthy career,” Koehnline Museum of Art Manager and Curator Nathan Harpaz says. “This exhibition illustrates the museum’s continuing dedication to the history of Chicago art and the medium of sculpture.”

Burlini studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and taught master classes in sculpture at the Illinois Institute of Technology. In 1977, the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago featured his work in a 10-year retrospective. Burlini’s work has been featured in major international and national exhibitions and gallery shows. Also, Burlini is the recipient of the Illinois Arts Council Humanitarian of the Year Award, honoring him for his creativity.
