Burnham's Son Gave A Mediterranean Feel To His Evanston Home

EVANSTON, IL — This Evanston architectural landmark was built in 1893 in the Queen Anne style and remodeled in the 1920s by its then-owner Hubert Burnham, who was inspired to incorporate a Mediterranean feeling into the home after travelling around Europe. Following the death of his famous father Chicago urban planner Daniel Burnham, fellow proponent of the City Beautiful movement Hubert was named one of the architects behind the 1917 Plan of Evanston. Located in the Lakeshore Historic District, Hubert's house has dual facades and is also known by the address of 1224 Sheridan Rd.
The recently listed 6,400-square-foot former home of Hubert and his wife Vivian sits about a block from the lakefront Burnham Shores Park and across the street to the south of the former Burnham estate. The family property was formerly bounded by Dempster Street, Forest Avenue and Burnham Place.
The home has six bedrooms and five-and-a-half bathrooms on a quarter-acre lot. Its plumbing, roof and mechanical elements have all been updated, according to its listing. It features spacious rooms throughout, its unique fireplace comes from the Strozzi Palace in Florence. According to its listing, it includes a DeGiulio cook's kitchen with modern appliances. There is a generous master suite upstairs and each bedroom is sizable.

A centerpiece of the home is an indoor patio with a glass roof inspired by the palazzo-style courtyards Burnham would have encountered in Italy.

Public records show the home was purchased in 2004 for $1.625 million by owners Julie Chernoff, an writer and former District 65 school board member, and her husband Josh, a Northwestern marketing professor and former Bain & Company consultant. According to the Cook County assessor's office, its 2018 estimated market value is nearly $1.22 million. It was listed publicly April 9 for an asking price just under $1.9 million.
