Christmas, New Year's In Evanston: 2019 Holiday Hours, Closures

EVANSTON, IL — The home stretch of the holiday season has arrived, with the final week of 2019 beginning with Christmas Eve on Tuesday. Communities across the North Shore are putting the final touches on preparations for the Christmas and New Year's holidays. Last-minute shoppers are out picking up presents and ingredients for holiday meals, travelers are taking to the roads and the sky as they head out to meet family and friends for the festive period, while most students are enjoying their winter break through the start of 2020.

First responders and employees at some businesses will be working on Christmas and New Year's, but most area business will be closed to give workers a chance to gather to share the holiday with loved ones.

Post office: Closed

Federal offices: Closed

Banks: Closed

Gas stations: Open

Refuse Collection: No recycling or trash collections will take place on Dec. 24 or Dec. 25, with all scheduled collections for Tuesday through Thursday to take place two days later than normal. Friday condo collections will take place Dec. 28. Regular collection will take place Dec. 31. There will be no pickups on Jan. 1, and collections scheduled for Jan. 1 and Jan. 2 will take place a day later. Friday condo collections will take place on a normal schedule.

Schools: Closed for winter break through Jan. 6.

Library: Evanston Public Library facilities will be closed from 3 p.m. on Dec. 24 and all day Dec. 25. The library will also close at 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 and will remain closed on Jan. 1.

City Facilities: The Morton Civic Center will be closed Dec. 24, 25 and Jan. 1, along with most community centers. The Gibbs-Morrison Cultural Center will also be closed Dec. 26-28. The city's 311 call center will close at 4 p.m. Dec. 24 and Dec. 31 and will be closed all day Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.

Grocery stores: Most will be closed Christmas Day, some will be open and many will have adjusted hours.
