Fountain Square Fountain To Remain Off For Entire 2021 Season

Significant repairs are needed to address water loss associated with the operation of the fountain.

(City of Evanston)

The City of Evanston is disappointed to announce that the Fountain Square fountain will remain off for the 2021 season as the City contracts repairs to address a significant source of water loss.

Upon turning on the fountain this spring, City staff observed low water pressure and shut the fountain off out of an abundance of caution while investigating the issue. The City worked with a forensic engineering firm, which concluded that the fountain contractor installed incorrectly sized waterstops inside the fountain and did not follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for installation, causing the water loss.

The City is currently soliciting estimates to repair the fountain, and intends to hold the contractor for the project responsible. At this time, the north plaza, where the fountain is located, remains open for seating, public gatherings and events. The City will provide more information about the repairs as soon as it is available.
