Dempster Street Starbucks In Evanston To Permanently Close

EVANSTON, IL — The Starbucks location on Dempster Street at Chicago Avenue will permanently close later this month, management announced.

After operating at the site for more than two decades, the Seattle-based coffeeshop chain's location at 528 Dempster St. is shuttering for good at noon on Dec. 27, according to a note posted in its window from managers Linda Hourani and Adely Giron.

"It has been a great pleasure to connect with you every day," they said. "We are very thankful to have played a role in your daily routine and that you have shared these moments of your life with us."

After the closure, Starbucks will have seven other locations in Evanston, including another one just a mile west on Dempster Street at Dodge Avenue.

Other chains to shutter Evanston locations since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic include Barnes and Noble, Andy's Frozen Custard and Panera Bread.

Since the start of the pandemic, 44 Evanston businesses have closed, according to city staff. The most recent announced closures were Eggsperience on Church Street, Clarke's on Davis Street and Evanston Pub on Sherman Avenue.

The Evanston Pub closing was planned prior to the pandemic due to the sale of the building, staff explained, while management at Clarke's said they hoped to reopen should Gov. J.B. Pritzker permit indoor dining in Illinois.

During that same period, 53 new businesses have opened in the city — the most recent of which was independent bookstore Frontline North. The Howard Street storefront is included in both counts after closing in February and reopening this month.
