Evanston Celebrating National Night Out Aug. 5

Neighbors are encouraged to host or attend events in their neighborhoods to take a unified stand against crime.

The following is from the City of Evanston:

Evanston community members are encouraged to take a stand against crime by participating in this year’s “National Night Out” Celebration on Tuesday, August 5, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Now celebrating its 31st year, National Night Out is a unique crime prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW). It is designed to (1) Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; (2) Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs; (3) Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and (4) Send a message to criminals letting them know the neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Rather than hosting one large event that draws community members out of their respective neighborhoods, Evanston residents are encouraged to host or attend events in their own neighborhoods to take a unified stand against crime and social disorder where they live. Residents and community organizations can get involved by participating in or planning a neighborhood block party or cookout; scheduling a visit from the police and fire departments; planning a parade or flashlight walk; designing a float; or sponsoring a youth crime- and drug-free activity. Additionally, residents are asked to turn on their front porch lights that evening as a display of unity.
