Evanston Man Charged In Howard Street Shooting Of Brian Carrion
Prosecutors say a man fleeing gunfire from a group of gang members murdered the 20-year-old Glenview resident near the CTA Red Line in July.

EVANSTON, IL — An Evanston man charged with fatally shooting 20-year-old Brian Carrion near the Howard Street CTA Red Line station in July was arrested last week in Ohio, according to police.
Prosecutors said Carrion was struck by gunfire after a gang-affiliated group began shooting at two Evanston men during an early morning dispute that began at Howard Street and Marshfield Avenue.
Shakiel Coleman, 26, of the 100 block of Clyde Avenue, had been wanted since Sept. 10 on a warrant for first-degree murder, according to police. Members of the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force arrested him outside Toledo on Saturday and he appeared in court for a bond hearing on Friday after being extradited to Illinois.

According to prosecutors, Coleman and a 21-year-old Evanston man had just picked up cash and planned to buy some ecstasy in the early morning hours of July 23.
They were confronted at Marshfield Avenue with a group of people who began questioning them about their gang affiliations. The two Evanston men responded that were "good" and did not need anything, prosecutors said.

People from the group started shooting at Coleman and his companion, who was grazed in the head, according to prosecutors. Multiple .40 caliber casings were found in the area.

Coleman took off running west toward the viaduct while holding a gun to his side, prosecutors said.
Carrion, a resident of unincorporated Glenview, was not part of the group of people on Marshfield. Prosecutors said he was developmentally delayed and had been living at a youth home.
After Coleman ran by him, Carrion decided to start running after him, according to prosecutors.
Witnesses saw him catch up with Coleman. Their legs tangled, and they both fell to the ground, according to prosecutors.
Coleman quickly got back to his feet and fired at close range, striking Carrion at least six times and leaving behind 9mm shell casings. He then continued running west through Gateway Plaza, where he dropped his magazine, according to prosecutors.

According to prosecutors, Coleman was convicted of residential burglary shortly after turning 18, violated his probation in 2013 and picked up three more bone forfeiture warrants for offenses included driving under the influence, driving without insurance and resisting police before being charged with murder last month.
U.S. Marshals Service officials said in a statement that Coleman was found in a hotel in the 1500 block of South Reynolds Road in Maumee after the task force received a tip about his location.
Coleman was held at the Lucas County Jail until being extradited back to Cook County, authorities said, where Associate Judge Michael Hood ordered held without bail until his next appearance at the Skokie Courthouse on Oct. 20.
