Evanston Student Nominated for #SheInspiresMe Award
Chyna Cannon has been Named a Youth Finalist in the Chicago Red Stars Annual Contest Highlighting Women Who Inspire Others

Roycemore School Senior, Chyna Cannon, has been selected as a youth finalist in the Chicago Red Stars, #SheInspiresMe contest. Propelled by her community service work and social justice advocacy, her candidacy made it to the final stages of this annual award that highlights women who inspire and uplift their community.
At the age of 12, Chyna had to overcome major adversities that shaped her to be a strong and independent young woman. She became a self advocate at a much earlier stage than most people and earned a scholarship to Roycemore School, an independent school in Evanston that celebrates the uniqueness of every student and encourages young people to find their passions.
Due to the small school setting, Chyna received individualized attention inside and outside of the classroom by teachers and staff, helping her solidify her confidence and find her voice. Through this support, Chyna discovered she could make a difference by starting a Diversity Club and steering efforts to secure a school-wide commitment to anti-racism. All while applying to college and worked part-time.
During the summer, Chyna spent her time working with Roycemore school Librarian, Hilda Gonzalez, to do a major library reorganization. Towards the end of summer, she played a crucial role in welcoming new students and assisting them with their transition in becoming part of the Roycemore family. Gonzalez says that she is proud that Chyna was nominated for this award, and that she will be successful.

“Chyna has a unique maturity and growth seen in very few people. I feel truly blessed to have her in my life. Despite what she has gone through she has already achieved so much more than the world had in store for her. Being in her presence is like witnessing a miracle” she says.
Voting is open until midnight on November 15th, with the Chicago Red Stars planning to announce winners the following week. If Chyna wins her division, she will receive a commemorative plaque, 2021 season tickets, autographed Red Stars items and a scholarship that will help her continue her important and meaningful work in the community.
