Fancy a Glass of Pinot in the Quinoa Aisle?

New Whole Foods wants to have a 'sip and shop' experience. Liquor Control Board not sold on idea.

The forthcoming Evanston Whole Foods store on Green Bay Road wants to allow customers to sip a glass of beer or wine as they shop.

Other Whole Foods allow this “sip and shop” experience, according to minutes from a recent Liquor Control Board meeting, but the store’s representative said Whole Foods could contain the alcohol to specific seating areas.

Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl was unsold on the idea, asking questions about how staff would prevent over-consumption and underage drinking. She said she thought restricting alcohol to specific areas would be more in line with Evanston’s residents’ values.

The issue was put on hold until September at the earliest, at which point Whole Foods will have reached out to the community.

The store is slated to open next August.
