Former Evanston Home Of Hubert Burnham Sold For $1.8 Million
Burnham, the co-author of the Plan of Evanston and son of the influential architect, remodeled the 1893 home with a Mediterranean feel.
EVANSTON, IL — The former home of the son of famed Chicago architect Daniel Burnham sold for $1.8 million in May. The 1893-built home of Hubert Burnham, an influential figure in the design of Evanston, spent just over a year on the market before selling for just 5 percent off its asking price.
After the death of his father, who oversaw the 1893 Columbian Exposition and developed the ambitious 1909 Plan of Chicago, Hubert became chair of the committee that developed the 1917 Plan of Evanston.
"People have thought of [Evanston] as a place distinct, somehow, from the other suburbs of Chicago — a place where certain material and moral advantages were enjoyed," the plan begins.

The six-bedroom, 6,400-square-foot "architecturally distinctive landmark treasure" includes an open floor plan, 20-foot ceilings and an enclosed indoor patio beneath a glass roof designed by Burnham, according to its listing.

The home includes a one-of-a-kind fireplace imported from the 15th Century Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, Italy. It has an updated roof, plumbing system and mechanical elements.

Its basement includes a sizable wine cellar, and the home's gardens were designed by the local landscape architecture firm Kettelkamp & Kettlekamp, according to its listing.

The house was first listed in April 2018 by a writer and former Evanston/Skokie District 65 school board member and her husband, a consultant and Northwestern University marking professor. Its asking price was just under $1.9 million. An offer was accepted in February and the deal closed on May 31, according to property records.
The new owners are Sara Huston Katsanis, a research assistant professor of pediatrics with Northwestern Medicine, and Elizas Nicholas Katsanis, an adjunct professor of pediatrics at Northwestern. Both professors specialize in the study of human genetics.
According to the Cook County Assessor's Office, the 2018 estimated market value of the property for taxing purposes was just under $1.22 million. Its annual property tax bill was nearly $32,500.
