The sale of a Dempster Street beauty overlooking the lakefront became the highest real estate deal in Evanston history.

EVANSTON, IL - An historic Evanston home on Dempster Street that overlooks Lake Michigan was sold for $4.9 million last week, making it the largest home sale in the history of the city.

The home on the original Daniel Burnham Estate at 115 Dempster St. in the city’s Lakefront Historic District was sold by John Henderson and his wife, Eileen on Friday, Sept. 9 for $4.9 million, according to a Crain’s Chicago report. The home was being used as a second home for the Hendersons after they moved to Australia.

The home, which includes $3 million of renovations over the 24 years Henderson owned it, was listed by Coldwell Banker for $5.3 million. Its $4.9 million sale price was still $400,000 more than the previous record sale in Evanston.
