Oscar Mayer Mansion's Price Sliced In Evanston
WOW House: The sausage magnate's fully restored former Forest Avenue home saw its price reduced by $100,000 this week.
EVANSTON, IL — This historic landmark offers the rare chance to live in a turn-of-the-century home with modern upgrades and original details. Built in 1901, Evanston's Oscar Mayer mansion was designed by Swedish architect Lawrence Halberg in a European style. The heir to the sausage throne, Oscar G. Mayer, lived in the home from 1927 to 1965.
Over time, the 7,500-square-foot home at 1030 Forest Ave. fell into disrepair. It was purchased by a home renovation company in June 2015 for $1.1 million. After a total rehab of the place – led by John Eifler and recognized for its thoughtful renovation and restoration by Evanston Historic Preservation in 2017 – the mansion returned to the market in May 2016 asking nearly $3 million.
Since then, the price has dropped several times. In its fifth reduction, the asking price was lowered by $100,000 Sunday, falling below $1.9 million for the first time. The home also has a seven-year freeze on assessments.
