Evanston Storm: Microburst Tears Off Piece Of Hospital Roof

Part of the parking garage roof at NorthShore Evanston Hospital was blown off by Wednesday's thunderstorm.

EVANSTON, IL — No one was hurt as severe weather tore off part of the roof of a parking structure at NorthShore Evanston Hospital Wednesday. Hospital officials say minor flooding has been managed and contained, and all operations are functioning as normal.

A mangled piece of metal was pictured lying in the hospital's driveway in the evening.

The damage occurred in a non-patient part of the hospital, according to a statement from the hospital's director of public relations.

There were other reports of heavy damage from the storm in the area.

Police in Wilmette told WLS a microburst, a sudden downdraft of air during a thunderstorm, may have hit the area.

Evanston City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz told Evanston Now the microburst caused much of the damage in Evanston and Wilmette. Multiple forestry crews were working to clear streets and sidewalks in more than a dozen places after more than 1,000 calls were received by the city's 311 phone line.
