'Sixteen Candles' Filming Location In Evanston Sold For Loss

The home of Molly Ringwald's character from John Hughes' 1983 directorial debut sold for 20 percent below asking last month.

EVANSTON, IL — The home of Samantha Baker, Molly Ringwald's character in the 1983 John Hughes' film "Sixteen Candles" sold last month for more than 20 percent below its asking price after spending two years on the market. Built in 1931, the six-bedroom, 3,250-square-foot home on a 0.3-acre lot was last purchased in 2006 for $1.25 million. The sale closed June 28 for $1.135 million.

The 12-room, three-story brick home includes two wood-burning fireplaces – one in the living room and one on the veranda – hardware floors throughout and a finished attic and an attached two-car garage, according to its listing. There's also an outdoor kitchen, television area and large patio table, plus a media room on the third floor and a large recreation room.

The sale was first reported by the Chicago Tribune's Elite Street column. It noted the area of northwest Evanston in which the home is located has been a popular backdrop for filmmakers.

Property records indicate the last time the home changed hands, the former CEO of a life insurance company sold the home to the co-founder and managing director of an investment banking firm. The latest buyers have not yet been identified via public records. According to realtor.com, nine single-family homes sold for more than $1 million in Evanston last month, compared to just one in June 2017.
