Snow Emergency Declared In Evanston After Heavy Snowfall

EVANSTON, IL — Evanston city officials declared a snow emergency through Wednesday following two days of heavy snowfall.

Parking is only permitted on odd-numbered sides of the street from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

And through 6 p.m. Wednesday, cars may only be permitted to park on the even-numbered side of the street.

On major streets marked as "Snow Routes," parking is forbidden from 11 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Parking is free at city-owned lots and garages through Friday. Free parking is also available at St. Francis Hospital's parking garage at Sherman Avenue and Austin Street, according to city staff.

Garbage and recycling pickups have been cancelled on Tuesday and Wednesday, and all special pickups scheduled for the week have been postponed. No update from city staff about rescheduled pickup was available Tuesday morning.

All community centers have been shuttered Tuesday, with the exception of the Robert Crown Community Center and Library, 1801 Main St., which will be open as a warming center only from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

According to National Weather Service snowfall reports, 18 inches of snow fell in Evanston between Sunday and early Tuesday morning. The current snow depth is more than 2 feet.

Light snow is expected to continue along the lake in the morning, shifting south and east by the afternoon. Another snow system is expected Wednesday afternoon into Thursday, forecasters predicted.
