Video: Police Shooting Ends Chicago-To-Evanston Murder Spree
Bodycam and dashboard videos show officers open fire on a suspected spree shooter on Jan. 9.

EVANSTON, IL — Videos show officers converge on a suspected spree shooter as he ran from an Evanston restaurant where authorities said he had just fatally shot a beloved grandmother. As the gunman approaches the front door of a Howard Street dollar store, a trio of officers appears to shoot him more than a dozen times in the back.
Evanston released portions of dashcam and bodycam videos capturing the moments immediately before and after the fatal Jan. 9 police shooting of Jason Nightengale. Authorities said the 32-year-old Chicago man went on a deadly rampage starting nearly four hours earlier in the Hyde Park neighborhood.
After shooting six people, seemingly at random, at four locations on the city's South Side, Nightengale drove a stolen car up to Evanston, according to police. He first entered a CVS before heading across Asbury Avenue into the IHOP, where he shot one woman in the head and tried to take another hostage.

The series of video clips shows officers chasing Nightengale on foot from the restaurant, across Asbury and Howard streets. Several squad cars arrive as Nightengale, who appears to be armed, reaches the front of the Dollar General store across the street after ignoring commands shouted by an officer chasing after him with a long gun.
Three officers open fire, and Nightengale falls near the store's entrance. A black handgun appears to have fallen to his side. Officers call for a first aid kit as they handcuff his hands behind his back.

Marta Torres, 61, was shot in Evanston and later died from her wounds. Three other people — a 15-year-old girl, a 77-year-old woman and an 81-year-old woman — were wounded.
According to an Evanston city attorney, a North Regional Major Crimes Task Force homicide investigation and a Chicago Police Department police shooting probe were still pending as of Thursday.
Additional audio records will be released in days, following redactions, with written records available once they will no longer jeopardize the ongoing Chicago investigation, the attorney said.
The suspected spree shooter is the first person shot dead by Evanston police in more than seven years.
In December 2013, officers shot and killed 29-year-old Kevin Ross after police said he robbed a bank on Grove Street. He was later linked to four other bank robberies and an unsolved double homicide.
