Forest Park Carjacking: Driver Of Stolen Car Steals Another, Crashes In Oak Park, Police Say

Police: A Chicago 17-year-old is being held after a car stolen at gunpoint in Forest Park later crashed into a tree in Oak Park.

FOREST PARK, IL — A 17-year-old is in police custody in connection with a Friday carjacking, police said. Around 4:17 p.m., a person later identified as the teen approached a man in a black Chevrolet Impala as he walked from his parked car to his apartment on the 7400 block of Madison. He pointed a gun at the man's face and demanded his car keys, according to a news release.

The Forest Park resident gave over his keys to the armed driver of the Impala, which was later found to have been stolen from Chicago with license plates that had been stolen out of Bellwood, according to police. The resident told police the Chicago teen then took his car from a lot on Hannah Avenue, just south of Madison and drove away.

Police said the man called 911 and gave dispatchers his license plate number and a description of his vehicle that had just been taken. After a short period of time, an Oak Park police officer spotted the recently stolen vehicle and began to pursue it until it crashed into a tree around Adams and Kenilworth, police said.

The driver got out and began to run, but he was quickly captured as a Cook County Sheriff K9 unit, police from Forest Park, Oak Park and River Forest set up a perimeter in the area of the crash, according to the release.

Police said they found a loaded handgun at the scene. The teen was being held pending charges after being identified by the victim, Forest Park police said.
