Library Hosts Tween Comics Class Today
The Forest Park Public Library gets animated Jan. 24 with a class that's all about comics.

As part of its Tween Thursdays series, the Forest Park Library is getting animated with a class that focuses on comic books and comic strips today.
Comic Relief starts today at 4 p.m. and runs until 5 p.m. In addition to discussing and exploring various comic styles and forms, kids will also get a chance to create some of their own.
"Lots of our kids are already great artists," said Susan Kunkle, youth services manager. "[Thursday classes] allow them a chance to do some hands on activities and mix it up each week."

The class will begin with a discussion of comic books and strips and will explore the various styles and how they are created. Resident comic expert Tom Malinowski, the library’s programming assistant, will lead the discussion.
"He has quite a collection," Kunkle said. "They'll talk a little bit about what they love about comic books."

Students will then have a chance to draw their own panels and create stories with supplies provided by the library. Students can take home their creations at the end of class to show parents.
The Tween Thursday series runs every Thursday in the library's resource room at 4 p.m. Some other recent projects include making your own working volcano and creating origami.
Next week's project will focus on building a time capsule.
