Franciscan Health recognizes caring nurse during Nurses’ Week

Lowell, Indiana resident is Olympia Fields hospital's latest Daisy Award recipient

Franciscan Health Olympia Fields recognized Rachel Krabbe, RN, as its latest Daisy Award recipient. The award was presented as the hospital celebrated National Nurses' Week, recognizing the exceptional contributions nurses make in the lives of its patients and team members.

A 10-year registered nurse serving in the hospital’s Medical/Surgical/Oncology/Telemetry unit, Rachel, who was also nominated for the Nurse of the Year Award, was nominated for a DAISY award by her manager and department team leader, who described the Lowell, IN resident as going above and beyond for her patients and her coworkers.

“Rachel takes on more than she should in many cases without leaving much for herself,” her manager said. “She attends to the needs of her patients with grace and skill while still helping her coworkers do the same. She is very caring and treats staff and patients with the respect and dignity that one would show their own family. She goes out of her way to make patients and staff feel good and cared for.”

About the DAISY Award

The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses is an internationally recognized honor that was established in 1999 via the DAISY Foundation members of the family of Patrick Barnes. DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. Patrick Barnes was a 33-year-old husband and father of an infant daughter who died eight weeks after being diagnosed with the autoimmune disease idiopathic thrombocytopenia. The award was established to honor what his family perceived to be extraordinary kindness and compassion by the nurses caring for him during his illness. Cinnabon’s are given because when Patrick was too ill to have an appetite, at one point he was able to eat a Cinnabon his father had brought, and Patrick requested that Cinnabon’s be brought in the next day for not just him, but for the nurses as a thank you for their care. More information about the DAISY award can be found at https://www.daisyfoundation.org.
