New Indoor Flag Football League Started By Park District

The joint effort between the Frankfort Park District and the Roma Sports Club is touted as a tackle football alternative.

FRANKFORT, IL — The Frankfort Park District is partnering with the Roma Sports Club to create a new indoor flag football league. The program is considered an alternative to full-contact tackle football, the park district announced Thursday.

Boys in first through sixth grade will be able to participate in the league, and the season runs from Oct. 8 to Dec. 15. Teams will practice Mondays and play games Saturday at Frankfort's Roma Sports Club, 9115 Roma Court.

Registration for the league runs through Sept. 24. The fee is $125 for residents and $130 for non-residents. A $10 late fee will be charged for registering after the deadline.

Along with players, the league also is looking for volunteer coaches. A meeting for coaches will be at 6 p.m. Sept. 24 at Founders Community Center, 140 Oak St.

With the degenerative brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy being linked to playing tackle football at the professional level, concerns have recently cropped up related to the risks associated with participating in the sport at a young age. A bill banning kids younger than 12 from playing tackle football was proposed in Illinois, but that legislation lost momentum in April.
