Standoff Ends With Man Emerging From House Wearing Knife Necklace

The man, who allegedly suffers from mental health issues, is accused of Macing his wife before barricading himself in their home.

FRANKFORT SQUARE, IL — A 54-year-old Frankfort Square man with mental health issues was arrested Thursday after barricading himself inside his home with a cache of handguns and knives, according to the Will County Sheriff's Office. Stanley W. Green had bunkered down in the home after allegedly fighting and Macing his wife, the sheriff's office said.

Green, of the 7000 block of West Roeland Court, was charged with domestic battery stemming from the incident. The Will County State's Attorney's Office is also looking at the possibility of additional charges against Green, said Kathy Hoffmeyer, a sheriff's spokeswoman.

According to Hoffmeyer, deputies responded to a call at around 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, concerning a woman, 55, who had been hurt following a fight with her husband in which she was Maced. The woman was at a neighbor's house when authorities arrived, Hoffmeyer said.

The woman told deputies that her husband had not taken his medication for an unspecified mental health problem and had barricaded himself inside their home, according to Hoffmeyer. She also said that her husband had multiple weapons inside the house, Hoffmeyer added.

When deputies approached the house, they saw Green through a window, wielding a large, machete-style knife with about a 2-foot long blade, Hoffmeyer said. Deputies ordered Green to come out of the house, but he refused.

That's when authorities cordoned off the area, which included Roeland Court and a stretch of Frankfort Square Road. Officers from the Frankfort and Mokena police departments were also called to the scene, as well as the Will County SWAT team, according to Hoffmeyer. Residents in the area were asked to evacuate, as well, she added.

At about 8:15 p.m., the SWAT negotiator made contact with Green. After nearly two hours, he was able to convince Green to come out, Hoffmeyer said.

Green — wearing a 6½-inch knife with a 3-inch blade as a necklace, Hoffmeyer said — was taken into custody without incident. A search of the house discovered numerous handguns and knives, according to Hoffmeyer.

Green's wife was treated at the scene by paramedics from Frankfort Fire Protection District. She was taken to Franciscan Health in Olympia Fields, where she was treated for her injuries and released, Hoffmeyer said.
