Can Downtown Batavia Support Two Grocery Stores?

Aldermen in Batavia discussed this issue at the Committee of the Whole meeting on March 31.

Berkley Finer Foods has had a home in downtown Batavia since 2009. But, there is interest from three different entities to open a second grocery store, the Kane County Chronicle is reporting.

“Batavia economic development consultant Chris Aiston told aldermen two grocery stores have expressed interest about locating in downtown Batavia, and a third grocery store is looking at the Batavia market area,” the Chronicle reported.

Berkley Finer Foods is located at 28 S. Van Buren St. in downtown Batavia, in a building that formerly housed Amstadt’s grocery store.

A building owner in Batavia has requested a market study, that could cost up to $7,500, the Chronicle said.

Aldermen were also concerned about the possible impact a future grocery store would have on the success of the existing grocery store.
